Historic Sanskrit texts including the Mahabharata, the Ramayana, as well as the Puranas describe the nagas as a strong, splendid and happy semi-divine species that may assume their physical form either as human (often with a halo of cobra hoods guiding their head), like a partly human serpent, or as a whole serpent.
